The emergency number in Finland is 112

Call the Emergency Response Centre’s emergency number 112 when you or someone else has an emergency where your or another person’s life, health or property, or the environment, is threatened or in danger. The Emergency Response Centre is open 24 hours a day. Alarms received through the emergency number are transmitted to ambulances, the police, the rescue department and On-call Social Services.

Call the emergency number, for example, in the following situations:

  • your or somebody else’s life is in danger
  • you or somebody else has been in a car accident or has witnessed a car accident
  • you notice that a fire has started
  • you notice that there has been a break-in somewhere

Please do not call the emergency number for non-urgent matters.

Do not call the emergency number, for example, in the following situations:

  • for an ordinary case of illness
  • for an incident where nobody is in danger, such as a power failure or traffic jam
  • you want to ask the police about matters concerning permits, for example

An unnecessary call may lead to a delay in help arriving in a real emergency. Misuse of the emergency number can lead to criminal prosecution.

When you call the emergency number 112

When you call the emergency number, you can speak either Finnish or Swedish. You can ask if the operator understands English, but this is not guaranteed. If necessary, the operator will get help from interpreter services.

When you call the emergency number 112:

The Emergency Response Centre operator will see your location automatically when you make the call through the 112 Suomi mobile application. You can download the application from your phone’s app store.
